Eager to Appear Younger Than You Are?

Updated: 3 days ago

We all know there is no secret elixir for looking youthful and vibrant. It’s simply a matter of keeping fit, both mentally and physically. Eating a healthy diet, not smoking, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, getting plenty of rest each night, surrounding yourself with positive people, and practicing gratitude, top the list of self-care routines that will keep you happy and usually younger looking than your actual age.

But here are a few easy tricks (some logical, some silly) that can shave years off your age instantly. You may want to give them a try!

Smile

The more you smile, the more attractive you appear to others. And smiling also can make you look more youthful. The “smile” muscles lift your face, making you appear younger -- a natural alternative to more invasive cosmetic procedures!

Get a Haircut

A fresh haircut can make you look younger by highlighting your best features and making you feel rejuvenated. From loose waves and tight curls to straight locks and layered looks, there are tons of hairstyles that can help refocus eyes to highlight your bone structure, hide imperfections, and help you appear younger and more confident. Your barber or stylist can advise which look is best for you.

Stand Up Straight

Good posture can make you look more confident and positive. And maintaining good posture can also reduce the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles, loose skin, and cellulite, taking up to ten years off your appearance.

Wear Cool Glasses

Some glasses styles can make you look younger by uplifting your face, softening your features, or complementing your skin tone. Check this guide if you’d like to upgrade your current eyeglass style: Frames that can make you look younger.

Eat Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is very high in flavanols, those same beneficial antioxidants also found in many vegetables and fruits. They will make your skin look better by increasing blood flow to the skin surface. And consuming a moderate amount of dark chocolate high in cacao at about 70-90% can slow the signs of aging by protecting your skin from UV damage and nerves from inflammation, according to a 2011 study published by the National Library of Medicine. To say nothing of the mood boost of eating really good chocolate!

Shave

Men who are clean-shaven often appear younger than men with beards and mustaches. Some studies suggest that beards can make men look up to eight years older. A great trick for young bucks, but not so much once you hit middle age.

Be Seen at the 'Golden Hour'

The perfect light to be seen in is that of the "golden hour," shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. This warm, even illumination softens facial features, minimizes wrinkles, and creates a more youthful glow. And because candles mimic the amber quality of a setting sun, they impart that same beautiful radiance to anyone’s face.

Wear Lighter Colors

“Creams, off-whites, tans and golds reflect light onto the face and make us look younger. Dusky pinks and pale lilacs can also work wonders in turning back the clock,” says Irish Today Show stylist Orla Diffily, among other suggestions. This is a secret known to interior designers of high-end shops and restaurants. The soft white table linens and ivory tinted walls of Harry’s Bar in Venice are specially designed to reflect the gentle light of the canal waters outside in a way that makes their customers look youthful and lovely!

Spritz on Grapefruit Oil

The Smell and Taste Treatment Research Foundation in Chicago, reports that a study showed that women wearing the scent of pink grapefruit were perceived by men to be more positive and more youthful – up to six years younger than their actual age. Other scents, including those of broccoli, pumpkin pie, banana, cucumbers, and spearmint leaves had no effect. Testing has yet to be conducted with men wearing the scent.
