You’ve probably heard this a zillion times before, and it may sound corny, but it's true! Be thankful for all the good things that take place in your life, and you will feel better automatically.
Practicing gratitude is as simple as writing a list of the things you are thankful for -- family, health, kindnesses shown to you, books, sunlight, friends, your cat, your favorite coffee, the ocean, mornings. Once you begin doing this, it becomes an irresistibly satisfying daily habit. Record it in a journal or even on your phone. Doing this puts you in a whole new frame of mind that, if you do it sincerely, really will make you feel happier.
Neiroscientist Alex Korb explains how. “The benefits of gratitude start with the dopamine system, because feeling grateful activates the brain stem region that produces dopamine. Additionally, gratitude toward others increases activity in social dopamine circuits, which makes social interactions more enjoyable.”
And studies have found that giving thanks and counting blessings can help people sleep better, lower stress and improve interpersonal relationships.
Though it may not be easy to find the time or remember to jot down a list of the things you are thankful for, once you start, it can quickly become a pleasantly addictive daily ritual. Jotting down and feeling thankful for one or two things is all you need to do. It will become the happiest five minutes of your day.
